Place Loom is a small boutique urban design and strategic planning practice. Our philosophy is all about thoughtful planning and design, weaving together place and cultural values, community aspirations and needs, with urban and natural elements, much like threads coming together in a loom.

At Place Loom, we believe great places are living, evolving expressions of culture, community and connection. Taking a holistic approach, our mission is to shape meaningful, inclusive, resilient and thriving places that contribute to the larger tapestry of community life.
We aim to strengthen communities and nurture places that stand the test of time. Places where people feel a sense of belonging, identity, and purpose.
Place Loom is founded and led by Cath O’Brien, an experience strategic planner and urban designer with a deep passion for crafting resilient, inclusive, and meaningful environments.
“Communities and places are much like tapestries. Individually, comprising threads of different colours and textures, together a tapestry – complex, resilient and full of meaning”

The best places are created through partnership. By working closely with clients, communities, and industry experts, we bring together diverse perspectives to shape places that are meaningful and connected.

We are committed to reflecting the identities and aspirations of the communities we serve, with a particular focus on honouring First Nations voices and stories. Our designs foster belonging, connection, and pride.

Innovation drives our work. We challenge conventional ideas, embrace fresh perspectives, and craft places that inspire, engage, and contribute meaningfully to the urban fabric.
As the Director and sole operator at Place Loom, I bring a unique blend of passion, expertise, and personalised service to every project. My solo operation allows me to maintain a dedicated, hands-on approach, ensuring that my clients receive the highest level of attention and care.
With expertise across diverse sectors including transport and mobility, industry, retail and commercial precincts, port and waterfront precincts, public and community spaces, housing, urban renewal and regeneration — our approach blends innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to lasting impact.
However, I firmly believe that collaboration is key to achieving the best outcomes. By partnering with talented individuals and organisations, we can pool our strengths and expertise to create innovative, sustainable and impactful spaces.
If you’re passionate about urban design, master planning and placemaking and you're looking for a collaborative partner, I’d love to connect and explore how we can work together to create something truly special.
