Burnie City Council adopts Public Realm and Streetscape Style Guide

Cath O'Brien

Place Loom is proud to have supported Burnie City Council in the development of its new CBD Public Realm and Streetscape Style Guide, a strategic framework that will shape the future design and delivery of public realm projects across the city centre.

A strategy-first approach

One of the strengths of this project was Council's commitment to establishing a clear vision before progressing priority streetscape upgrade works.

Rather than focusing on individual projects in isolation, Burnie City Council took a long-term view by developing a framework that aligns future investment with Burnie's unique identity, community aspirations, and the objectives of the City Centre Urban Plan. This strategic approach will help ensure future projects contribute to a consistent, cohesive and welcoming city centre experience for all.

Bringing community and technical perspectives together

The Style Guide was informed by Council's technical specialists, community representatives forming part of a working group, and leading practice.

Working collaboratively, the guide balances community aspirations with practical design, infrastructure, maintenance and operational considerations, creating a guide that is both ambitious and pragmatic. The result is a shared vision for Burnie's public spaces that reflects local character while supporting decision-making.

The adoption of the CBD Style Guide marks an important milestone for Burnie City Council and provides a strong foundation for future investment in the city centre.

The style guide ensures that every project, from small upgrades to major transformative projects - all contribute to a cohesive, connected and distinctive Burnie. (Burnie City Council, 2026)

Our contribution

Place Loom led the development of theStreetscape Style Guide, translating community insights, strategic objectivesand technical requirements into a practical framework for future streetscapeimprovements.

The guide establishes a clear approach topublic space and streetscape character, including  materials, planting, furniture, signage andother visual elements, utility infrastructure, and custom solutions. Itprovides Council with a consistent reference point for future projects. Itensures that every project, from a small upgrade to a major transformation, contributes to a cohesive, connected and distinctive city centre for Burnie.

We're proud to have played a role in delivering a strategy that will guide Burnie's transformation over the next10–20 years, and look forward to seeing this vision come to life across the city's streets and public spaces.
